Hamad expansion details revealed

Tara CraigBy Tara CraigFebruary 20, 20203 Mins Read

Matar, the Qatari airport operator, has revealed details of Hamad International Airport’s multi-phased expansion project plans and the contracting companies and joint ventures that will contribute.

The five contracting companies and joint ventures awarded expansion projects at Hamad include: a joint venture (JV) between Midmac Contracting, TAV Tepe Akfen Investment Construction and Taisei Corporation; a JV between Consolidated Contractors Company and Teyseer Contracting Company; the Urbacon Trading & Contracting, Bahadir Construction and Tedeschia Construction Enterprises JV; Beumer Doha; and Al Jaber Engineering Company.

The passenger terminal expansion works, central concourse building and early works contract was awarded to the Midmac Contracting, TAV Tepe Akfen Investment Construction and Taisei Corporation JV. The project will include an additional 140,000m2 (1,507,000ft2) terminal building, located airside, adjoining the existing terminal building through Concourse C with an axis that will culminate in a central garden. The new building will include a transfer area designed to help shorten passengers’ connection time.

The remote transfer baggage facility handling systems (RTBF) and building projects have been split into two contracts. The first, involving the construction of the facility, which will begin in February 2020, was awarded to Al Jaber Engineering Company. Beumer Doha won the contract to supply and install the baggage handling system (BHS) in the remote transfer baggage facility building.

Development of the remote transfer baggage facility handling systems consists of an airside facility of approximately 34,000m2 (365,000ft2) to house the new state-of-the-art baggage handling system. The new baggage facility will enable the capacity of the BHS to grow while ensuring minimal disruption to the existing airport operations during the construction phase, which is to be carried out landside and converted to airside upon completion.

The baggage handling system will be equipped with a best-in-class high-capacity tote-based individual carrier system (TOTE/ICS) that provides fast, safe and flexible baggage handling from check-in to discharge with 100% accurate track and trace of baggage at every stage of the handling process. The hold baggage screening system and equipment will comply with the latest European Civil Aviation Committee (ECAC) Standard 3 requirements.

Hamad’s expansion plans will be carried out in two phases, A and B. Phase A will include linking the North Node to the new Central Concourse. This phase is set to increase the terminal’s handling capacity to more than 53 million passengers annually by 2022, when Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup. Phase B of the expansion plan will take the airport’s capacity to more than 60 million passengers annually.

The expanded terminal area will span 240,000m2 (2,583,300ft2) once completed and will be integrated with the existing terminal, enabling passengers to transfer easily from one area to the other, enabling the airport to continue to operate with a single terminal. The expanded terminal aims to be the first in the MENA region to achieve a 4-star GSAS rating and is expected to achieve LEED Silver status.

The expansion works will not affect operations of the existing terminal and passengers’ connection times will be maintained, according to the airport.

Don’t miss Ioannis Metsovitis, SVP operations at Hamad International Airport, give his presentation, Capacity requirements and operational efficiency, as part of the Airport Design, Planning & Development – Middle East & Asia stream at this year’s Passenger Terminal CONFERENCE.
