Air transport IT specialist SITA has released a new report examining the effect Resolution 753 will have on baggage tracking and baggage operations in general.
According to IATA, more than 4.5 billion bags are handled globally by the air transport industry and this number is expected to double in the next 20 years.
While the focus today is on meeting the baggage tracking requirements outlined by Resolution 753, SITA’s new report, Intelligent Tracking: A Baggage Management Revolution, takes a long-term view regarding the overall impact on the baggage management sector.
According to the report, the bag tracking data generated and collected under Resolution 753, together with artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as machine learning, robotics and predictive analytics, will revolutionize the management of baggage, making the issue of mishandled bags near obsolete. The bag tracking data generated and collected will also provide the air transport industry with a rich stream of data that can be used to predict and respond to situations ahead of time.
In the closing remarks of the report, Ilya Gutlin, president Air Travel Solutions, SITA, said, “Initially, tracking data will provide a view of “what happened”, allowing airlines to provide passengers with the reassurance of knowing the location of their bag. All this data will also give operational staff more accurate information and better situational understanding. With this they can address issues proactively and optimize baggage operations.”
