Malta International Airport has unveiled a series of improvement works that are to take place throughout 2015. The airport will invest €4m (US$4.5m) in total, with €2m (US$2.25m) being spent on expanding the non-Schengen arrivals area of the main terminal. Other projects will also include €950,000 (US$1m) for improvements to the runway, apron and taxiway, €520,000 (US$584,000) for the reorganization of the high voltage network, €450,000 (US$505,000) for new back-up standby power generators and €100,000 (US$112,000) on a new emergency operations center.

The investment follows a record-breaking year for Malta Airport after welcoming nearly 4.3 million passengers in 2014, a 6.4% increase over the previous year. Four new airlines are expected to arrive at the airport in 2015 including Aegean, Finnair, Jet2.com and SWISS.

Alan Borg, interim CEO for Malta Airport, said, “It has been a great year for Malta International Airport and the tourism industry. The record growth every month this year, shows that the island’s strategy to attract more traffic in the shoulder months is reaping results. We remain focused on increasing traffic during the winter months and attracting more visitors from new markets to our islands. We are looking forward to another positive year with a steady 2% growth for 2015.”
