The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) for Saudi Arabia has agreed an SR1.48bn (US$395m) deal with Muhaidib Contracting for the expansion of Prince Naif Regional Airport in Al-Qassim, reports online news agency ArabNews.com.

Mohammed Al-Mijlad, the airport general manager, has said the three-year contract was necessary in view of the significant growth in demand for air travel from residents in the region, with passenger numbers expected to rise to three million annually.

Al-Mijlad said the plan included a main terminal building covering an area of 646,000ft², a VIP lounge of 37,700ft², a mosque spanning 17,200ft² and a 30,000ft² airport administration building. The design of the airport was based on the sand dunes and oases in the Al-Qassim region, reflected by the use of gold in the passenger terminal building and mosque.
