Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is implementing a series of passenger-facing and operational developments ahead of the summer peak season.

The upgrades focus on Terminal 2 and are intended to support traffic growth while maintaining operations until the completion of the airport’s longer-term Terminal+ development program.

Passenger processing capacity has been increased with the addition of seven hybrid check-in counters at Terminal 2A. Installed in a former retail area, the counters can operate as either traditional desks or self-service bag-drop units, depending on demand.

Hamad International Airport has partnered with the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) to introduce public electric vehicle charging stations as part of the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency, known as Tarsheed.

The initiative supports Qatar National Vision 2030, which targets a 25% reduction in national carbon emissions. The first EV charging stations have been installed on the ground level of the airport’s east parking lot.

According to the airport, the fast-charging unit can serve two vehicles at the same time and delivers up to 50kW of power.

Newcastle Airport has opened a new waiting zone for taxis and members of the public as it prepares to handle a record six million passengers in 2026.

Located at Callerton Parkway, adjacent to Callerton Parkway Metro station, the facility provides a designated and safe area for vehicles to wait before picking up passengers. Taxis, minibuses and private vehicles can use the zone for up to 90 minutes free of charge.

From January 6, the airport will further enhance the site with the introduction of a complimentary electric shuttle bus service, initially operating every 30 minutes.

Pittsburgh International Airport‘s new US$1.7bn terminal is set to open to the public on Tuesday, November 18, after four years of construction.

The opening announcement comes after the new terminal systems went through rigorous testing over the past several months, with two large public trials featuring more than 2,000 participants providing input and feedback on their experience.

Pittsburgh says the upgrades were needed to transform the outdated airport designed as a US Airways hub into a modern ‘origin-and-destination’ airport that can accommodate a range of airlines and their business needs.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is to start the phased commissioning of two automated parking lots at Hong Kong International Airport in November 2025. Developed and operated by AAHK, the two parking lots are to be located in the restricted area at the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).

At the initial stage in November, the fully automated Park and Fly facility will provide about 1,800 parking spaces.

The second stage of San Diego International Airport’s (SAN) Terminal 1 Parking Plaza has now opened, adding approximately 2,400 airport parking spaces. The Terminal 1 Parking Plaza now offers more than 5,200 parking spaces steps away from the existing Terminal 1 and the New T1, which is scheduled to open in September 2025.

Vehicles can access the Terminal 1 Parking Plaza, located directly across from Terminal 1 at 3501 North Harbor Drive, by following directional signs along westbound and eastbound North Harbor Drive.

Ostend-Bruges Airport has expanded its parking capacity with the opening of Parking 4 (P4). The new parking lot, developed by parking operator Parking Luchthaven Oostende, provides 125 additional parking spaces 200m from the terminal.

The airport’s parking rates for Parking 4 are: €10.50 (US$11.90) per day for up to seven days; €9.50 (US$10.78) per day (for stays longer than seven days); and a maximum €150 (US$170) per month.

Renewable energy company RenEnergy has identified 203,705 spaces across 144 airports in England and Scotland that could be fitted with canopies holding solar PV panels. If all were used, they could generate 188.4GWh of energy – enough to power 52,340 homes annually.

The ongoing research is a result of academics manually identifying parking spaces at airports in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by using existing satellite imagery.

With 11 car parks and 51,500 spaces alone, London’s Heathrow Airport has been highlighted as the UK’s prime site for this technology.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and Revel have opened an electric vehicle (EV) charging station at John F. Kennedy International (JFK) Airport. It more than doubles the number of EV chargers available at the airport.

The new charging station is within the airport’s for-hire vehicle (FHV) hold lot and accessible via the Van Wyck Expressway or Belt Parkway. With the new Revel charging station’s 24 additional chargers at the FHV lot adjacent to JFK Building 141, JFK now hosts 46 EV fast-charging ports that are operational at all times, helping to reduce charging wait times and improving traffic flow to the benefit of customers and FHV drivers.

Manchester Airport is to introduce a barrierless system for vehicles dropping off and picking up passengers.

Automatic number plate recognition system

The new technology will be managed through an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system like that already in use at some other UK airports and familiar settings like bridges and tunnels. It will come into operation in late March 2025.

Cameras will identify cars by their registration number (license plate) and automatically record who has used the pickup or drop-off area.
