Munich Airport has officially opened a new pier at Terminal 1, marking a major expansion of its passenger infrastructure.
The opening ceremony was attended by around 1,000 guests from politics, business and aviation, including Bavarian minister-president Markus Söder, federal transport minister Patrick Schnieder and Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers.
Lammers said the development would play a key role in the airport’s long-term growth: “The new pier represents the future of our airport: more capacity, more comfort, more international connections. As a modern gateway to the world, it strengthens our role as a leading European aviation hub.”
The new facility spans approximately 95,000m² and is designed to handle up to six million additional passengers per year. The 360m-long, six-level building includes modern check-in areas, centralized security checkpoints equipped with CT technology, waiting areas and a range of retail and dining options.
The pier can accommodate up to 12 short- and medium-haul aircraft or six wide-body aircraft at the same time and will serve around 40 international airlines. Three of the six levels are dedicated to passenger operations, with additional amenities including quiet zones and prayer rooms.
There are also two lounges in the new pier, including the Airport Lounge World, a two-story facility offering dining, work and relaxation areas, and an Emirates Lounge for eligible passengers.
Retail and food and beverage offerings have been expanded, with around 20 retail and service outlets and five restaurants operated by airport subsidiary Allresto. The central marketplace area forms the core of the passenger space, while a walkthrough duty-free store has been introduced for the first time at the airport.
The €665m (US$783m) project has been funded independently by the airport and is part of its broader development strategy, despite challenges faced during the Covid pandemic.
The new pier is expected to increase capacity and improve passenger flow as Munich Airport continues to expand its international connections.
