Bristol Airport has awarded a £30m (US$40m) contract to Farrans for a two-floor terminal extension as part of its wider £400m (US$534m) transformation program.

Construction has begun on the extension, which will infill space between the existing terminal and the departure gates. The project is designed to support an increase in capacity to 12 million passengers per year.

The expanded terminal will increase floor space by nearly 45% and include 17 new retail and food and beverage units, bringing the total number of outlets to 38.

Bristol Airport and engineering consultancy Ultima Forma have completed a liquid hydrogen (LH2) refueling project aimed at supporting future zero-emissions aircraft, as part of the airport’s Aviation Carbon Transition (ACT) Programme.

The two organizations have produced a technical report examining how a liquid hydrogen refueling system could be built and operated at Bristol Airport to meet the requirements of emerging hydrogen-powered aircraft. The airport said the work represents a step toward enabling zero-carbon regional aviation.

Asset management firm Macquarie has announced it will take ownership stakes in Bristol, Birmingham and London City airports in the UK, supporting the airports to expand their route networks, enhance passenger experience and implement sustainability strategies.

Macquarie will take a 55% stake in Bristol Airport, 26.5% in Birmingham Airport and 25% in London City Airport, with the terms of each transaction undisclosed. The London City acquisition reached financial close at the same time as signing, while the acquisition of ownership stakes in Bristol and Birmingham airport are expected to reach financial close by Q4 2025, following the satisfaction of regulatory approvals.

Bristol Airport in the UK has launched a two-month consultation on its masterplan for 2040, which proposes a larger terminal building as well as connections to the US East Coast and the Middle East to meet meet future demand for air travel in the region.

Proposed changes

Alongside a larger terminal building, the proposals also include improved walkways directly serving aircraft to reduce passenger transport to aircraft by bus.

Melbourne Airport has signed five-year partnership agreements with local charity groups Western Chances and Banksia Gardens worth more than A$1.5m (US$1m) to support the work they do for communities in Melbourne’s north and west.

Local youth charities

The new five-year, A$875,000 (US$500,000) partnership agreement with Western Chances will provide scholarships, employment opportunity programs and ongoing support to hundreds of young people in Melbourne’s west.

Since 2004, Western Chances has assisted more than 4,000 young people in Melbourne’s west to fulfill their potential through scholarships and free access to programs, enabling recipients the access to education and support they need.

First published in August 2024, the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s 2023/2024 Airport accessibility performance report assessed the 28 UK airports that handled over 150,000 passengers in the calendar year 2023 against the quality standards framework and covers performance over the year from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. Ratings for the 28 airports break down into the following categories: 11 airports fell into the ‘very good’ category; 12 airports ranked in the ‘good’ category; and five airports were rated as ‘needs improvement’.

Bristol Airport is inviting expressions of interest from potential partners to take part in a two-stage tendering process for the provision of its security services at the airport.

Security services at the airport includes but is not limited to the staffed security of its passenger and staff screening areas.

Suppliers are able to express an interest and submit a Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) through an e-tendering system by June 24, 2024.  PQQs will be shortlisted in July with tender invitations issued during the week commencing July 22.

Bristol Airport has invested £11.5m (US$14.6m) in next-generation security scanners, enabling all customers traveling through security to keep mobile phones, laptops and liquids in their hand luggage.

All passengers flying from Bristol Airport from June 14 will benefit from the new enhanced technology and processes. Passengers will no longer have to restrict toiletries and liquids to 100ml bottles and will be able to leave laptops, tablets and mobile phones in their hand luggage as they pass through security screening.

The UK government and the Department for Transport (DfT) have released the joint Future of Flight action plan, which could help make flying taxis, crime-fighting drones and critical 999 care deliveries a reality by 2030, the plan says.

Setting out a roadmap for drones and novel electric aircraft in the UK, the plan details how the technology could transform skies, with studies estimating drone technology could boost the UK economy by £45bn (US$57bn) by the end of the decade.

DHL Supply Chain has signed a five-year contract with easyJet to manage ground-handling operations at Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the UK.

The contract will see DHL deliver core customer service and logistics operations at Liverpool airport including check-in, bag-drop, baggage logistics, gate management, aircraft loading, dispatch and pushback.

As part of the contract, DHL will also introduce electric equipment, with a target of transitioning to a 90% electric fleet by September 2024.
