Interactive photo wall installed in T2 at Changi Airport

Changi Airport Group (CAG), the operator of Changi Airport in Singapore, has unveiled a series of interactive installations designed to entertain passengers on their journey through the airport.

Launched in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), the installations combine digital interactive screens with artistic models and photo opportunities, helping to create a sense of place in the terminals.

The centerpiece of the project has been installed in Terminal 2 (T2) where motion-sensing technology is used to interact with passengers in the form of an LED ‘Dots Portrait Wall’. Travelers standing in front of the screen are asked if they would like to take a portrait image, which is then superimposed on the passenger’s choice of a series backdrops.

The entire creation then appears on the screen in a black and white flip-dot display, which can be sent to friends and family over email. Iconic background options include Gardens by the Bay and Merlion Park, as well as Changi Airport’s control tower and Kinetic Rain art installation.

On the other side of the installation is a ‘Motion Silhouette Wall’, which responds to movements in real time. Adopting the same motion-sensing technology, backdrops and patterns change as passengers in front of the wall move and interact with the animation.

In Terminal 1 (T1), passengers are presented with a photo opportunity where they can have their picture taken on a trishaw cycling through a 3D backdrop of Chinatown and Joo Chiat. The trishaw installation first appeared at the airport when it opened in 1981 and has been reintroduced in the same location.

Other photo opportunities can be found throughout Terminal 3 (T3) where a number of crafted cardboard art pieces depicting icons of Singapore have been placed along luggage claim belts. Featuring local places of interest such as the Singapore Flyer, Sultan Mosque, Supertrees and Flower Dome, these cardboard pieces are decorated with creative doodles and offer arriving passengers a glimpse of the attractions that await them on the island as they collect their luggage.

Bernard Siew, vice president of experience creation, CAG, said, “We are excited to introduce to our visitors these interactive experiences at Changi Airport. These new variations are designed to engage their senses and create pleasant memories of their visit to Singapore and Changi Airport. To capture greater mindshare among tourists to this region, CAG and STB continue to work together to constantly refresh and promote the Singapore experience. We look forward to offering even more unique concepts to delight our travelers.”

Jacqueline Ng, director, marketing partnerships and planning, STB, said, “Changi Airport is an integral part of the Singapore experience and a perfect place for visitors to learn more about the breadth and depth of offerings they can enjoy in Singapore. We hope that these new installations will both inspire and entertain, and help to start and end a visit to Singapore in a more memorable way. We will continue working with our industry partners to find new and innovative ways to amplify the Singapore experience.”
