Retail operator JR Duty Free has opened its newly developed duty-free store in the departures area at Darwin International Airport in Australia. The new store is part of a wider terminal expansion project which has seen the outlet more than double in size.
The expansion of the terminal is the largest project undertaken by the airport since the building was first opened in 1991. When completed, more than 118,000ft2 of extra space will have been added to the departure lounges, security screening area, and check-in and baggage facilities.
Ian Kew, CEO for Northern Territory (NT) Airports, the airport operator, said, “Our expanding terminal has a clear goal and that’s improving the travel experience for passengers. Internationally, there’s a strong leisure market traveling in and out of Darwin – people who fly regularly and demand choice, interest and convenience when they shop. The completion of the arrivals and departures stores will provide a great atmosphere for shoppers and a positive impression for visitors to the region.
“The new stores will also give customers the chance to pick up department store offerings that are harder to come by elsewhere in Darwin. Darwin was the site of JR Duty Free’s re-entry to the Australian market in 2007, and a strong partnership has developed since then. Its commitment to this extensive redevelopment displays confidence in Darwin’s potential and the market’s future.”

The beauty offer includes new brands such as Shiseido and Philosophy, and a much deeper range of products in the existing brands.

They can use their PC, tablet or mobile to purchase duty free and tax free products and their order will be waiting for them at the collection counter upon departure or arrival.”
