Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions has been chosen by Southwest Airlines to install a new baggage handling system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Terminal 1 (T1). The project will involve the layout, engineering, assembly, commissioning and integration of an outbound baggage screening system and inbound baggage handling system. Southwest Airlines is the only carrier operating from T1.
Michael Reichle, CEO of Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions, said, “This order is a great success for Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions. It is of particular importance since the US American airport market is the biggest one worldwide.”
Siemens won the contract as part of a US$508m modernization project at T1 that also includes a relocated terminal entrance, a new security screening checkpoint, new and expanded dining and retail facilities, refurbished arrival and baggage claim areas, and new passenger boarding bridges. The baggage handling system has a completion date of summer 2017 with all other construction work to be completed by 2018.
