PTE live news: NEC Display Solutions celebrates successful signage project at Stockholm Arlanda Airport

Kirstie PickeringBy Kirstie PickeringMarch 27, 20192 Mins Read

NEC Display Solutions Europe is showcasing its latest display technologies at Passenger Terminal Expo, which strive to transform the passenger experience and drive new revenue opportunities in airports.

The company will demonstrate how digital signage solutions and DirectView LED screens provide new digital advertising revenue opportunities for airport operators, as well as providing attractive passenger information and wayfinding displays.

The NEC team is on hand to demonstrate how airports can maximise the value of their investment in display technology by using real-time data to improve wayfinding, optimise passenger flow, and create more compelling advertising.

NEC is also showcasing its new project that has transformed the passenger experience at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The company recently engineered and installed two giant LED advertising and split-flap board replacement screens at Arlanda, while successfully overcoming complex EMC interference issues that have traditionally limited LED use in busy airports.

Johan Cederberg, sales manager at NEC Display Solutions who worked on the Stocholm project, told Passenger Terminal Today, “The whole process started around three years ago when Stockholm Arlanda installed LED screens that disrupted its air traffic control. This, of course, meant they needed to find an alternative solution.

“The airport wanted a commercially friendly FIDS system that would also meet EMC Class B so that they did not cause any interference with other communications systems. This led to us creating a tailored solution in collaboration with Swedavia, the system integrator, and the installations teams. We are really happy with the outcome and so are our customers.”

Other highlights of NEC’s presence at Passenger Terminal Expo include learning how passengers can enjoy a more efficient journey through airport terminals thanks to facial recognition technology, discovering how airports facilitate passenger satisfaction with state-of-the art FIDS systems and smart queue management, and choosing the right technology for moving your wayfinding strategy to digital.

Richard Wilks, director of transportation at NEC Display Solutions, added, “Traditionally display was seen as a cost centre, but airports need to realise that they are an important revenue generator. Display technologies like DirectView LED create new opportunities for advertising – including for duty free retail and food and beverage concessions. What’s more, they are vital in creating a perfect passenger experience. From intelligent wayfinding that reduces queues, to communicating the airport’s services and even the location’s ‘brand’, intelligent, large-format displays can bring back a real sense of occasion to air travel.”
