Travelers at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) can now enjoy the new Lego store, which opened in the airport’s B/C Connector on November 25 and is the retailer’s largest travel location in the Americas.

The 93m2 store, which is being run by Airport Retail Stores, provides an interactive retail experience for customers and includes a Philadelphia Lego Mummer sculpture composed entirely of Lego bricks. The Mummers Parade is a family-friendly celebration that has entertained visitors from Philadelphia and beyond for more than 120 years.

Engineering, management and development consultancy Mott McDonald has been appointed Airports Masterplan Framework consultant by Matarat Holding to advise on airport development across Saudi Arabia.

Over the next two years, Mott McDonald will provide reviews and updates to existing masterplans for 25 Saudi airports and develop robust strategies for future growth and investment. The airports include two major hubs, Riyadh Airport and Jeddah Airport, five airports focused on international travel and tourism, six regional airports, six domestic airports and six remote airports, which serve a social or developmental purpose.

A new virtual tower (vTWR) has gone into operation at Hamad International Airport (HIA) – the first large-scale digital tower system to be certified by safety regulators in the Middle East.

The vTWR, which officially went live in February 2025, has been provided by Searidge Technologies in partnership with ADB Safegate and NATS. The companies have collaborated closely with the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) and the HIA team to support the Western Taxiway and Stand Development Project – an ambitious expansion that significantly increased the complexity of airside operations.

Leidos has announced a new partnership with x-ray diffraction imaging (XRDI) and detection technology provider Quadridox to develop advanced checked baggage screening technology aimed at increasing security while keeping luggage moving quickly during the screening process.

The new agreement combines Leidos’s Examiner 3DX CT with Quadridox’s Delphi XRDI technology to provide airports with deeper insights into potential threats and better position them to keep pace with evolving regulatory requirements.

“Separately, these technologies provide high levels of threat detection,” said Nik Karnik, vice president and global security products division manager within Leidos’s commercial and international sector.

Abu Dhabi Airports (ADA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with SITA to explore the co-development of an AI-driven, intelligent total airport management (iTAM) platform at Zayed International Airport that brings real-time data, insights and operational decisions together across the entire airport ecosystem.

Under the MoU, both organizations will explore a shared operational data platform that integrates information from airlines, ground handlers, ATC, government agencies and airport systems.

According to ADA, the system would help it to build a more connected and resilient operating model that is capable of earlier disruption detection, better resource optimization and smoother passenger journeys.

Max Connop has been appointed as regional practice area leader for the Asia Pacific Middle East (APME) region at global architecture firm Gensler.

Connop will be based in Singapore and will lead the growth of Gensler’s aviation practice in the region. He will collaborate with clients, partners and multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative airport solutions that enhance the passenger experience and respond to the global push toward decarbonization, according to Gensler.

Passengers who lose items while traveling through Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) will now be able to file a claim for their belongings from anywhere in the world thanks to a new self-service lost and found system.

The digital tool, which was launched on August 11, enables passengers to submit a claim, check its status in real time and receive automated updates 24/7 from any device by visiting the lost and found webpage. Previously, passengers had to call or email the information desk during business hours to report lost items.

Aurrigo International has been awarded a contract worth almost £1m (US$1.36m) by Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) to develop an autonomous baggage and passenger moving system with Teesside International Airport in the UK.

Starting in mid-October, the company’s eight-seat Auto-Shuttle will kick off work to transport passengers directly from the aircraft steps to the terminal building. In early January 2026, Aurrigo will follow this by introducing the Auto-DollyTug, a fully driverless vehicle designed to move cargo and baggage around airports.
