Automated equipment specialist Alstef has been selected to install the baggage handling system (BHS) for the newly developed Terminal 1 (T1) building at Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport in France.

The €14m (US$15.4m) contract involves the design, implementation and maintenance of all aspects of the BHS including check-in, baggage screening, baggage sorting at departures and baggage delivery at arrivals. As part of the contract, Alstef will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of all the baggage systems at the airport for a period of 10 years, beginning in January 2016. This will involve deploying a team of 10 local specialists.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry’s new terminal will cover a surface area of approximately 230,000ft2 across three floors and will enable the airport to increase its annual passenger capacity from 10 million to 15 million by 2020. The BHS will be delivered in two stages alongside the terminal building work, with the majority of the system being installed in 2016, and the remaining check-in counters and automated cross-belt sorter from Selex being installed in 2017.
