Sunshine Coast Airport has opened a new outbound baggage facility as part of its A$170m (US$110m) terminal transformation program.
The airport said the facility will increase checked baggage handling capacity to support rising passenger numbers and meet updated security requirements. It marks the completion of the first stage of the wider redevelopment, with additional terminal upgrades scheduled over the next 18 months.
Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills said the project is a key investment in future growth. “Investing in critical infrastructure like this means we can grow, meet the needs of our airline partners and continue to support national and international connectivity,” he stated.
“This new facility is the first major step in our commitment to provide the best service and experience for travelers. Behind every smooth passenger journey is state-of-the-art technology and security that delivers a seamless travel experience.”
According to general manager of operations Kate McCreery-Carr, the upgrades are intended to streamline baggage handling from check-in to aircraft loading while improving security screening. “The new facility includes more than 300m of new conveyor systems, including two large make-up loops to support increased baggage capacity, doubling what was originally here at the airport,” she said. “We have also upgraded our scanning equipment in accordance with federal government requirements.”
She added that the new technology allows for more advanced baggage inspection and reduces manual intervention, improving screening accuracy and operational efficiency.
Construction began in May 2025 and was completed over seven months, with more than 500 jobs supported during the first stage. Mark Jewell, general manager of key accounts at construction company McNab, said the project involved coordination with multiple stakeholders, including the airport, airline partners, Energex, Rapiscan and Ansir.
Sunshine Coast Council mayor Rosanna Natoli said the upgrade will strengthen regional connectivity. “A strong, efficient airport improves connectivity, which is essential for regional development,” she stated.
Work continues on the next phase of the expansion, including a new check-in area and arrivals hall, both due to open later this year. The full terminal redevelopment is scheduled for completion in 2027.
