American Airlines will begin deploying electronic boarding gates at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) this summer, following a pilot program conducted in November 2025.
The airline plans to install the technology at scale at its largest hub, starting with the Terminal C Pier Expansion. It said the move will make it the first major US network carrier to roll out Dormakaba electronic boarding gates across a major hub airport.
“Boarding plays a key role in how customers experience the final moments before their flight, and electronic boarding gates will further elevate that experience, creating a more seamless and consistent process,” said Heather Garboden, chief customer office, American Airlines. “This innovative change is part of a broader shift toward creating a more intuitive travel journey.”
The system uses Dormakaba Argus Air XS gates, with nearly 20 units planned for initial deployment. According to the airline, the gates are designed to guide passengers through boarding with automated validation of boarding passes and clear on-screen instructions.
American said the gates will also regulate passenger flow to reduce congestion on the jet bridge and streamline manual processes for staff, allowing more time for customer service and operational tasks.
“After piloting the technology late last year and seeing positive feedback from both customers and team members, we’re excited to further incorporate electronic boarding gates at DFW,” said Jim Moses, senior vice president of DFW Hub Operations. “This is another step forward in creating a modern, seamless journey for customers.”
The gates will debut in the new Terminal A and Terminal C pier expansions, part of a wider multiyear modernization program at DFW. American said the rollout is intended to simplify the boarding process while maintaining existing security standards.
The introduction of electronic gates forms part of the airline’s broader effort to standardize and digitize the passenger journey. Following the DFW deployment, American plans to expand the technology to other hubs and gateway airports.
The initiative builds on other recent digital developments, including the rollout of One Stop Security for international connections and the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program, as well as planned enhancements such as free inflight wi-fi for AAdvantage members and updates to its mobile app.
American said these investments are aimed at improving consistency and efficiency across the travel experience, from check-in through boarding.
