As CEO of Heraklion International, Nikos Anastasiou is ideally placed to fill in PT World on the progress of the airport’s development. Speaking at PTE World 2026, he says, “This is one of two greenfield projects currently being developed in Europe. It’s a big-scale project for Greece – the last time we did a greenfield project was Athens Airport over 20 years ago.
“It’s exciting. There are a lot of challenges, but construction is progressing rapidly. By December 2025, we were 70% complete.”
Anastasiou went on to discuss the pros and cons of developing a greenfield site, the importance of a good passenger experience and his vision for the airport.
“We are envisioning having an airport city … We believe it’s going to be a boost for Crete.”
