Construction work started yesterday (September 23) on the Terminal Modernization Project at Tallahassee International Airport in Florida, USA. The project is expected to create more than 200 jobs and will involve reconfiguring the airport’s lobby and the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) checkpoint.

The project will include a new baggage reclaim system, ticket counters for airlines and rental car agencies, security screening machines, a new TSA screening room and some aesthetic upgrades such as new terrazzo flooring and LCD monitors.

Scott Maddox, city commissioner and liaison to Tallahassee International Airport, said, “This is a step toward our overall goal of improving our airport. We are committed to enhancing the Tallahassee air travel experience, from our terminal improvements to adding more flights and lower fares.”

Construction for the Terminal Modernization Project will begin in the baggage claim area, with demolition work taking place until March 2016. Once demolition is complete, crews will begin working on the installation of the new amenities. The entire project is expected to last until October 2016. The construction contract has been awarded to local contractor Cook Brothers for the amount of US$10.5m. Funding for the project has come from grants from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), agreements with the TSA and local funding.

Chris Curry, director of aviation, Tallahassee International Airport, said, “During construction, it will be business as usual. We ask that passengers pardon our dust, and we will continue to keep the high quality of service that our passengers expect.”
