UK-based aircraft boarding ramp manufacturer Aviramp has supplied a new solar-powered ramp to Ireland West Airport, marking a recent deal in the Republic of Ireland that the company says could lead to further projects in the country.
The all-weather, step-free boarding ramp has been introduced at the airport in Knock and is already in use for passenger boarding and disembarkation. Aviramp said the ramp is designed to provide an alternative to stairs and ambulifts, particularly for passengers with reduced mobility.
Adam Corfield, head of global sales at Aviramp, said the ramp had been used on several flights during commissioning. “They put the ramp on three flights, all of which had multiple wheelchairs that would usually need a high lift. But thanks to the Aviramp, the high lift was never used. Most of the passengers went up and down the ramp, which made the turnarounds much quicker.”
Corfield added that the airport is looking to adopt more solar-powered ground handling equipment, and that Aviramp expects further opportunities in Ireland. According to the company, more than 950 of its ramps are currently in use worldwide.
John McCarthy, head of airport operations and commercial services at Ireland West Airport, commented, “We were delighted to work with the team at Aviramp in installing the new state-of-the-art Aviramp here at the airport.
“This system provides many benefits for the airport, including improved operational efficiency, a better passenger experience and cost savings, combined with a focus on sustainability, which is hugely important.”
McCarthy said the step-free design and gentle slope improve accessibility for wheelchair users, passengers with reduced mobility, and families with young children. He added that the ramp also provides additional shelter for passengers during boarding.
Aviramp’s health and safety manager, Ross Underhill, attended the airport to oversee staff training on the new equipment. The company manufactures step-free boarding ramps and bridges for use when aircraft are parked on remote stands, providing an alternative to stairs and separate lifts.
