Japanese technology developer NEC Corporation has been selected by the Receita Federal do Brasil (RFB) to provide NeoFace Watch facial recognition technology for 14 airports throughout Brazil. RFB acts as the secretariat of the Ministry of Finance of Brazil but is also responsible for tackling noncompliance, smuggling, piracy and drug trafficking in the country.
NEC’s NeoFace Watch solution enables automatic facial recognition through photos, CCTV images, recorded videos and webcams. The technology will work in tandem with other security systems at the selected airports to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of customs procedures.
For this project, NEC will deliver facial recognition systems that consist of NeoFace Watch software, CCTV cameras, servers and network infrastructure, as well as integration services for RFB’s existing systems and maintenance services.
Daniel Mirabile, president of NEC in Brazil, said, “NEC’s facial recognition technology was evaluated by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as the world’s number one in precision and speed of analysis. After integration with the RFB system, it will facilitate the identification of passengers who have been registered for suspect activity by the agency, contributing to the improvement of the country’s border controls and, consequently, to the improvement of society in general.”
The Brazilian international airports adopting NEC’s solution are: Tancredo Neves, Brasília, Viracopos/Campinas, Afonso Pena, Hercílio Luz, Pinto Martins – Fortaleza, Eduardo Gomes, Augusto Severo, Salgado Filho, Recife/Guararapes, RIO Galeão – Tom Jobim, Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães, São Paulo–Guarulhos, and Cataratas del Iguazú.
