Western Sydney Airport is calling for workers for the next stage of its construction, with work on-site expected to expand quickly in the new year.
According to chief executive officer Graham Millett, initial earthworks are complete, and the site is ready for major earthworks, which will involve moving some 25,000,000m2 of earth.
“We are commencing recruitment for this exciting new phase of this once-in-a-generation project and we’ll be holding an employment forum to provide potential candidates with an overview of the work and the positions we are recruiting for,” Millett said.
The airport is looking for operators of earthmoving equipment such as scrapers and tipper trucks, as well as service crews for the large fleet of earthmoving equipment needed to level the site. It is also looking for people to service these machines at an on-site workshop – plant mechanics, auto-electricians, light vehicle mechanics, boiler makers, servicemen, refuelers and apprentice mechanics. Information sessions will be held on December 10.
Millett added that Western Sydney Airport has strong employment targets for local, indigenous and learning workers – as of June 30, local Western Sydney workers made up more than 50% of the total workforce, exceeding the construction phase target of 30%.
“As someone who grew up in Western Sydney, I’m proud to be delivering an airport that is already creating so many opportunities for locals and we’ll be working hard to ensure that continues,” Millett concluded.
