In this interview filmed on the show floor at PTE World 2026, Smiths Detection’s VP of Portfolio, Innovation and Digital, Richard Thompson, talks to PT World about the company’s CTX detection system. As Thompson explains, the aim of the system is to minimize inconvenience for passengers while meeting all security and safety standards, and enabling airports to maximize their operational benefits.
Thompson says that the CTX is the only certified system that enables passengers to leave two liters of liquid in their bags during scanning. Because everything can stay in bags – liquids and electronics – fewer trays are needed, meaning airports can achieve the same passenger throughput in a smaller space.
Smiths Detection also offers a tray-return system and layers networking and AI to reduce the small number of false alarms. The 3D image of scanned baggage gives security staff a full 360° view, greatly increasing the ability to spot any threats.
