New Shops and Restaurants coming to T3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Arizona, has unveiled its full line up of restaurants and retail outlets for its newly renovated Terminal 3 (T3) facility, due for completion in 2020.

The new food and beverage contracts were awarded to Host International and SSP America while retail contracts were granted to Stellar Retail Group PHX and HG PHX T3 Retailers 2017 JV – a joint venture led by Hudson. To read the full story, click here

iGA releases video showcasing Istanbul New Airport

Turkish airport operator iGA has introduced a new animated video detailing everything there is to know about the Istanbul New Airport mega project, set to open on October 29, 2018.

Boasting an annual passenger capacity of 200 million once fully complete, Istanbul New Airport will combine all the latest aviation technologies with large, spacious architecture inspired by the cultural heritage of Istanbul.

The video highlights the spacious shopping and food and beverage outlets that have been designed with the Bosphorus in mind – the 32km (20-mile) strait that joins the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea in Istanbul. The video also reveals brand new services such as the passenger guide robot and the “Where is my car?” app, providing passengers with maximum comfort and convenience. Istanbul New Airport will host flights to more than 350 destinations and will be supported by approximately 143 passenger boarding bridges, 13 check-in counter islands, 468 check-in desks, 114 self-service check-in kiosks, 228 passport control counters, and 51 bag-drop units.

Denver International Airport unveils festive passenger surprises

Denver International Airport has added an extra element of festive excitement for passengers passing through the hub with a number of surprises. Customers were treated to yoga sessions with goats accompanying the activity, while NFL legend Peyton Manning greeted unsuspecting passengers as part of the series of holiday treats.

Global design and consultancy firm One Works has released a video showcasing its extension at Venice's Marco Polo Airport that opened in the summer. The addition features a light-filled gallery, huge forecourt, and improves accessibility for passengers arriving or departing by Vaporetto or water taxi.

Using digital innovations to streamline operations at Schiphol Airport

Royal Schiphol Group, the operator of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands, provides an insight into the technologies supporting its artificial intelligence (AI) program Wilbur. The video explains how Wilbur uses multiple data sources, including various sensors from BLIP Systems, to streamline operations for baggage handling, passenger flow and aircraft movements.

Christchurch Airport expansion and modernization

Christchurch Airport in New Zealand has unveiled its new vision for the airport in 2040, including an expanded terminal and simplified wayfinding. A series of minor runway extensions would also cater for larger and more frequent aircraft, without creating more noise for local residents.

The latest masterplan aims to provide a framework that delivers future growth while making the most of innovations in technology and sustainable management. The improvements will enable the airport to cope with a 65% increase in aircraft movements by 2040, with passenger numbers expected to reach 12 million annually by this date. Aberdeen International Airport opens new terminal extension

Scotland’s Aberdeen International Airport has officially opened the extension of its terminal with the help of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, of The Duchess of Rothesay as she is known in Scotland.

The completion of the first phase of the airport’s transformation project has allowed for the second phase of construction to get underway, and this can now be seen within the terminal building. From summer 2018, this current construction site will house a larger and much improved central search security area and World Duty Free retail space. The third and final phase of the transformation project will bring a more spacious departure lounge, in addition to increased retail and catering offerings for passengers from 2019. Maple Leaf Lounge opens at Vancouver Airport

Airline operator Air Canada has unveiled its new Maple Leaf Lounge at Vancouver International Airport in Canada following an 18-month expansion and renovation program.

Located opposite the priority security lanes for international departures, the new expanded lounge provides eligible customers with a stylish environment to relax and refuel, whilst providing panoramic views of the airfield. Designed by Vancouver-based Gustavson Wylie Architects, the Maple Leaf Lounge measures 1,250m2 (13,460ft2) with seating capacity for 258 customers over two levels.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport tests robot at security lines

A robot has been tested at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to help passengers prepare for security checks. Through audio instructions in English and on-screen animated instructions in six different languages, the robot reminded passengers to remove items such as scarves, light jackets and belts and empty their pockets before going through screening.

For the pilot program, Sea-Tac officials tracked the number of times passengers triggered the body scanner alarm during and after the robot test. The technology augments the work of human beings, allowing them to spend more time on critical security tasks.

OTG opens shared-use restaurants at Newark Airport

Restaurateur OTG and design partner Rockwell Group have completed the installation of three shared-use food and beverage (F&B) outlets in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

Located in the Global Bazaar food market, the three outlets will host a total of six new F&B concepts that will begin the day as breakfast bars before switching signage and décor to become their evening counterparts.

Terminal 1 improvements at Hong Kong Airport

Airport Authority Hong Kong has revealed the details of a new HK$7bn (US$900m) enhancement program for Terminal 1 (T1) at Hong Kong International Airport.

The terminal will be extended on its north side, creating additional space for more than 40 bag-drop kiosks and two baggage reclaim carousels. The project also includes the construction of a weather-proof Sky Bridge connecting T1 and the North Satellite Concourse. The 200m (660ft) footbridge will feature an observation deck and catering outlets in the towers at both sides, providing scenic spots for passengers.

Video of Canopy Park concept at Changi Airport’s Jewel complex

Changi Airport Group (CAG) has unveiled the latest design details for its new Canopy Park concept, one of three main attractions located in its Jewel mixed-use complex at Changi Airport in Singapore.

Canopy Park will be the third centerpiece of Jewel along with the Forest Valley, a five-story garden filled with thousands of trees, plants, ferns and shrubs, and the 40m (130ft) high Rain Vortex, which will be the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. The newly-unveiled elements of Canopy Park include three iconic play attractions – Sky Nets, Canopy Mazes, and Discovery Slides.

SITA launches automated mobile check-in kiosk called KATE

SITA's new autonomous check-in kiosks move throughout the airport terminal to areas where there is a high volume of passengers looking to check-in for their flight. Referred to as KATE, the intelligent kiosks use existing SITA data systems such as FlightInfo API to identify congested areas and reduce passenger queue times.

Norway's new Avinor Oslo airport opens

Norway’s Avinor Oslo airport has officially opened, expanding its capacity to approximately 32 million passengers per year. Construction began in 2011, with the new 117,000 square meter area making the total airport 265,000m². There are 11 new jet bridges, 37 restaurants, 10 kiosks, 21 shops and 10 new remote aircraft parking spaces.

British Airways reveals £52m design plans for JFK airport's terminal 7

British Airways has revealed details of its £52m (US$65m) redesign of New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) international airport’s terminal 7.

The redesign at JFK will be completed by the end of 2018 and is to include a spacious, modern new check-in concourse and a separate Club World and First area. The space will draw inspiration from The First Wing, which recently opened at Heathrow terminal 5, and the new premium check-in area at Gatwick’s south terminal.

A new look for Reagan National Airport

Reagan National Airport has launched Project Journey, a $1bn project to add a commuter concourse that will replace bus operations from Gate 35X to exterior aircraft boarding areas and new security screening areas.

It is the first major construction project at the airport in two decades, and is expected to reach completion in 2021. Read more about the project here.

Manchester Airport Transformation Program - T2 fly-through

Airport operator Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has released a fly-through video showcasing early design renderings of its development plans for Terminal 2 (T2) at Manchester Airport. The transformation of T2 into the airport's main terminal is a key component of MAG's £1bn (US$1.2bn) investment program.

Ground broken on North Satellite expansion at Seattle-Tacoma International

The Port of Seattle has officially broken ground on its North Satellite Modernization Project with the aim of improving congestion and the passenger experience at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Washington.

The US$550m project will expand and renovate the aging facility by adding eight new gates and a 240ft extension to the west of the existing building. Phase one of the project is scheduled to open in 2019 followed by the renovation of the eastern side of the facility which will be completed in 2021.

YVR releases fly-through video of proposed Pier D expansion project

Vancouver Airport Authority, the operator of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in British Columbia, Canada, has unveiled the third stage of its C$5.6bn (US$4.2bn) transformation program, which will expand the airport’s capacity to handle an estimated 35 million passengers by 2037.

The third consultation phase will lead to the final plan’s public release in 2018, once approved by the Canadian Minister of Transport. Proposed construction works will begin with the expansion of Pier D and the East Concourse, as illustrated by the following fly-through video.

Funds approved for construction of Midfield Satellite Concourse at LAX

The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners has agreed to invest in the construction of a Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) and related Baggage Optimization Project (BOP) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in California. The new concourse has been designed as an addition to the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) and will include 12 gates in its first phase of construction. The MSC will provide the terminal with further flexibility and gate space by reducing the reliance on remote gates.

Heathrow Airport releases Christmas advert

Heathrow Airport has released a Christmas-themed advert in the same heart-warming style as those from the UK’s leading stores. Based on the idea of reconnecting loved ones, it shows two elderly teddy bears arriving in London for the festive period. The two make their way from the aircraft to arrivals, negotiating escalators, baggage claim and duty free. In the final moments, they change into humans as they meet their grandchildren. The advert has had a positive response on social media, and is set to Chas and Dave’s I’m Coming Back.

London Luton Airport releases animation of terminal redevelopment project

London Luton Airport has released a fly-through animated video of its £110m (US$145m) terminal redevelopment project. The CGI representation provides viewers with a glimpse of how the airport will look once the dual carriageway access road and terminal extension have been completed. Created by 3D visualization specialists Glass Canvas, the video also gives an indication as to how the inside of the terminal will appear for the first time. The transformation plans will increase capacity at the airport to 18 million passengers per year by 2020

London Heathrow Airport releases animation of proposed expansion plans

Earlier this year London Heathrow Airport selected architectural practice Grimshaw as the concept designer of a new Central Terminal Area (CTA) for the airport’s proposed three-runway expansion project. The airport has now released an animated video providing further insight into the development plans.

Heathrow began looking at project partners for its three-runway system after Sir Howard Davies’s Airports Commission recommended the airport in 2015 as the best choice for expanding airspace in the UK. In March 2016, Heathrow selected Arup, CH2M, MACE and Turner & Townsend as program client partners for the project should it be given the go ahead.

Google and Aisle411 create augmented reality app for San Jose Airport

Aisle411, a provider of indoor mapping and location solutions, has leveraged Google’s Project Tango technology platform to create a new augmented reality experience for passengers navigating Mineta San Jose International Airport in California.

Passengers who download the new app simply hold their mobile device in front of them to reveal a series of options belonging to that particular area of the airport. They can then click on augmented digital billboards to display information belonging to amenities in that area. This can include promotions and menus for retail and dining outlets or directions, estimated walking times and flight information belonging to departure gates. The app even includes digital content such as 3D animated sharks and beer glasses to further entertain travelers.

Billion-dollar development plan unveiled for Nashville International

Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) has unveiled its new development plans for Nashville International Airport in Tennessee, including the construction of an international arrivals building and the expansion of the airport concourses and lobby areas. The plan is expected to cost US$1bn and will be phased in over the next five to seven years.

Animation illustrates what an expanded London Gatwick could look like

London Gatwick Airport has released an animation illustrating what the airport could look like if it was to gain approval for a second runway. A UK government decision on whether Gatwick should be expanded is expected later this year as part of plans to increase airport capacity in south-east England. According to Gatwick, a second runway will deliver the economic boost the UK needs.

KLM's service robot Spencer completes trials at Schiphol Airport

Spencer, a passenger assistance robot developed by Dutch airline KLM, has completed a series of trials at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands. The initiative was conceived by KLM to help reduce costs associated with passengers missing connecting flights but may be developed in future to carry luggage and speak with passengers.

To help safely navigate the terminals, Spencer uses a laser guidance system that measures the distance to stationary objects and people, allowing it to circumnavigate large groups or adjust its speed to passengers following behind.

Outer shell complete at Lyon Airport

After nearly 18 months of construction work, the structural shell and roof of the new Terminal 1 (T1) building at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in France has been completed. Work has now turned to the internal partitions of the three-story complex.

The new terminal will cover a surface area of approximately 700,000ft² and will enable the airport to increase its annual passenger capacity from 10 million to 15 million by 2020. The T1 extension has been designed by British architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and is being built by French-based GFC Construction, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction.

Design renderings from Charlotte Douglas Airport renovation program

Charlotte Douglas Airport in North Carolina, USA, has released a new video highlighting some of the renovation projects scheduled to take place at the airport this summer.

The video shows design renderings from some of the later stages of the Destination CLT project including the renovation of the terminal Atrium and the expansion of Concourses B and E. The works are part of a US$2.5bn masterplan taking place at the airport until 2020.

Auckland Airport has become the world’s first airport to offer a robotic click and collect services to passengers shopping in the airport’s duty free store. Dubbed ACE (Automated Collection Experience), the process takes just 30 seconds and the arm can carry up to 330lb.

Manchester Airport unveils video of US$1.4bn development program

Airport operator Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has unveiled a new fly-through video showing how the airport will look in the 10 years following the completion of its £1bn (US$1.4bn) investment program.

The video was shown at the opening of the UK Northern Powerhouse Conference, where Ken O’Toole, managing director of Manchester Airport, spoke about the need for change regarding air passenger duty (APD) in the UK.

UAE residents approve Concourse D at Dubai International

More than 2,000 UAE residents have given their seal of approval for the newly built Concourse D at Dubai International Airport, following an initial operational readiness, activation and transition (ORAT) trial held on February 6, 2016. The trial follows months of comprehensive tests involving staff and stakeholders, and paves the way for the opening of the new AED3.3bn (US$900m) facility.

Westfield complete T2 renovation at LAX

Retail operator Westfield has completed its Terminal 2 (T2) redevelopment project at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in California, USA. Westfield invested US$78.3m in the T2 project, which transformed approximately 76,000ft² of terminal space including 16 new retail and dining outlets and a modernized common area.

Salt Lake City International airport expansion program

Salt Lake City International Airport has released a series of videos detailing its US$1.8bn plan for constructing a new terminal, concourses and accompanying infrastructure. Work began on the project in July 2014 with completion scheduled for 2020. The current terminal was built more than 50 years ago with an annual passenger capacity of 10 million. In 2014, the airport accommodated more than 21 million travelers.

M2mobi launches updated app for Schiphol Airport

Mobile developer M2mobi has launched an updated app for Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands containing a new map, location detection and indoor navigation functionalities.

Passengers can use the app to be directed to their departure gate, with an easy to read display and walk times. The navigation tool has also been linked with the app’s shopping features, allowing passengers to choose a desired product before being guided to the store’s location.

Yangtze River comes to Gatwick Airport

London Gatwick Airport has unveiled its new Yangtze River interactive soundscape experience for passengers crossing its Skybridge in the North Terminal.

Developed in partnership with HSBC and WWF, A Living River takes more than 100 hours of authentic sounds from 35 locations on the Chinese river, and then transmits them through 160 speakers along the 590ft walkway.

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), the operator for Brisbane Airport in Australia, has released a video detailing the journey from the planning phase through to the eventual opening of its newly redeveloped A$45m (US$32m) International Terminal.

Expansion of Keflavik International Airport in Iceland

Airport operator Isavia has released a video of its future intentions for Keflavik Airport in Iceland. The expansion project will increase the annual capacity of the airport to 25 million passengers by 2040. The concept was created by Nordic.

Construction work enters de-propping phase at Abu Dhabi Airport's MTB

The construction of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s new Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) in the UAE has reached a critical phase with the process of de-propping the curved roof. This will give the impression that the futuristic structure is floating above 18 steel arches.
