Hamad International introduces Sunflower program to support passengers with hidden disabilities

Hamad International Airport introduces Sunflower program to support passengers with hidden disabilities.

Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha has introduced the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, aimed at improving support for passengers with non-visible disabilities as they move through the airport.

The voluntary program allows passengers to wear a Sunflower symbol to discreetly indicate that they may require additional assistance, such as more time, clearer communication or extra support during their journey. The initiative is designed to encourage understanding and more supportive interactions across the passenger experience, without requiring travelers to disclose personal details.

Inclusive environment

HIA said the Sunflower program forms part of its wider accessibility framework, with the goal of creating a more inclusive and predictable airport environment. Francois Bourienne, senior vice president of commercial, strategy and customer experiences at Hamad International Airport, said, “Guided by principles of autonomy, dignity and predictability, Hamad International Airport continues to design passenger journeys that support diverse needs while maintaining clarity and consistency. The Sunflower program forms part of HIA’s broader accessibility framework, creating a barrier and hassle-free airport that truly serves everyone. Guided by our joint commitment with our stakeholders, we will continue investing in fit-for-purpose facilities and services to ensure every journey through our airport is accessible.”

As a Sunflower-enabled airport, HIA has integrated the program across key passenger touchpoints for arriving, transferring and departing travelers. The Sunflower symbol is displayed throughout the terminal to signal to passengers with hidden disabilities that support is available.

Widespread support

HIA said awareness of the program has been extended across airport operations, including Qatar Airways Group, airline partners, retail outlets and service providers. Staff have received training to recognize the Sunflower symbol as an optional way for passengers to communicate their needs.

Andy Faulkner, CEO of Topland, the exclusive partner of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower in the Middle East, said, “We are pleased to welcome Hamad International Airport in Qatar as a member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. As one of the world’s leading airports, Hamad International Airport’s commitment represents an important step in creating more inclusive and accessible travel experiences. Their membership helps raise awareness of hidden disabilities, recognizes the diverse needs of passengers and employees, and reinforces the importance of training to ensure that individuals who may need extra support are met with understanding and respect.”

The Sunflower program is used at airports and transportation hubs worldwide to support people with conditions that are not immediately apparent, including cognitive, neurological and sensory differences.
