The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that six airports in the region will receive a total of US$9.7m for upgrades and improvement works. The grants are distributed through the Aviation Transportation Assistance Program, which is a capital budget grant funded with bonds.

Projects include US$5m for the construction of a new terminal at Williamsport Regional Airport, with a further US$750,000 being used to relocate the fuel farm to make way for the new building. Allegheny County Airport will receive US$2.9m to renovate its terminal parking lot and sidewalks. Other works include runway improvements for Doylestown and Quakertown airports, and extra hangars for New Castle and Hazleton municipal airports.

Leslie S Richards, acting secretary for PennDOT, said, “With aviation supporting thousands of jobs in Pennsylvania, it’s vital that we ensure airports in the region can make safety and operational upgrades. These projects are also investments in the communities these airports serve.”
