ICM ABDs go live at Narita

Tara CraigBy Tara CraigSeptember 17, 20192 Mins Read

The first 10 Series 7 Auto Bag Drop (ABD) units from ICM Airport Technics went live at Narita International Airport Terminal 1 South Wing on September 17.

The remainder of the ABDs will be progressively rolled out over the coming months across all terminals at Narita, according to Sydney-based ICM.

Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) is the first airline to utilize the newly introduced automated self-service bag-drop machines at Narita. These machines will be the first such technology that ANA has used for its international flights. By integrating them into its check-in process, the airline aims to upgrade not only the domestic, but also the international flight experience.

Use of the self-service bag-drop machines will be available for international flights to most destinations starting on September 17, 2019, with North American destinations becoming eligible by the end of 2019. The machines will streamline the check-in process and remove one of the most stressful elements of the travel experience.

“ANA seeks to set the standard for the integration of technology that makes travel simpler and more straightforward, and the addition of these self-service baggage-drop machines will have an immediate impact,” said Masaki Yokai, senior vice president, ANA. “We remain committed to working with airports and other partners to field test new technologies and develop solutions that improve customer service.”

Narita International Airport Corporation will eventually install the self-service baggage-drops at all terminals. With the first machines debuting at Narita Airport Terminal 1 in the South Wing D zone, the Narita International Airport Corporation has labeled this area the ‘Smart Check-in Zone’.
