Photographic artwork unveiled at Frankfurt Airport

Airport operator Fraport has unveiled a 540m (1,770ft) photographic artwork installation in the passenger tunnel in Terminal 1 (T1) at Frankfurt Airport in Germany.

Martin Liebscher, a German artist renowned for his large format photography and sculptures, created the installation called ‘Destinations’. It runs along both sides of the 270m (885ft) passenger walkway and is composed of panoramic images from over 40 destinations around the globe. In 1998, Liebscher achieved notoriety with his work titled ‘The World’s Longest Group Photo with One Person’, which made it into the Guinness Book of Records.

Anke Giesen, executive board member, Fraport, said, “We’re highly pleased to have won over Martin Liebscher for this unique project and are absolutely thrilled by his creation. It is very fitting that the Frankfurt Airport global hub is now linked artistically through images to the rest of the world. We hope that our passengers will be entertained by this photographic installation and that it even stimulates discussions among travelers. Art should always be a moving experience in the eye of the beholder and this installation certainly achieves a moving experience in many ways.”

Liebscher said, “Frankfurt has a connection to art unlike any other city. In particular, photographic art is
ever-present in many institutions and collections across the city.”

Fraport’s art collection already contains other work by Liebscher, including his outdoor ‘Terminal’ installation, a
tower-like sculpture that welcomes staff and visitors to Fraport’s corporate headquarters building at Frankfurt Airport. Liebscher also serves as professor of photography at Offenbach University of Art and Design near Frankfurt.
