Beumer extends BHS contract at Viracopos International

Automated baggage handling system (BHS) supplier Beumer Latinoamericana Equipamentos (BLE), part of the Beumer Group, has been awarded a second operation and maintenance (O&M) contract for the BHS at Viracopos International Airport in Brazil.

The new contract extends the existing two-year agreement, which included the supply and installation of the BHS, and ensures that BLE will continue to operate and maintain the system for a total of 66 months. This includes monitoring and supervising the system via supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA); monitoring the baggage flow; and resolving operational anomalies.

During the first year of the O&M contract, B&E’s on-site employees completed several work orders for preventive maintenance, with no work orders required for corrective maintenance, while the Beumer Group BHS handled the baggage from 4,400 flights with zero delays.

Viracopos International’s BHS in the new Terminal 1 (T1) facility consists of 72 check-in stations; 7200ft of belt conveyors; and six standard 200ft baggage reclaim carousels and a 260ft carousel to handle high capacity planes such as the Airbus A380. The system also integrates a fully automated LS-4000 tilt-tray sorter with the capacity to sort up to 4,400 items of baggage per hour.

João Scharam, maintenance manager, Viracopos International Airport, said, “The new contract was awarded to BLE due to the successful, error-free operation of the BHS throughout its first year of operation and the close collaboration which has developed between BLE and Viracopos Airport.”
