Renovated departure lounge opens at Schiphol Airport

Airport operator Schiphol Group has officially opened its newly renovated passenger departure lounge at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands.

The Departure Lounge 2 project grew the retail and catering space by approximately 20%, bringing the total area of the first and second floors to 170,000ft². The operator appointed architecture firm Kossman.Dejong to design the interior, while architects Benthem Crouwel and NACO designed the surroundings. Work for the project was carried out in phases during the night, enabling airport services to continue as normal during the day. The project took more than 18 months to complete and utilized sustainable materials such as FSC-certified wood and LED lighting throughout.

André van den Berg, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Schiphol Group, said, “To mark Schiphol’s 100th anniversary, we are presenting our passengers with a marvelous gift, a departure lounge unlike any other in the world, where passengers can explore not just one, but seven different worlds.

“Working with our partners, we have been able
to create a unique experience in a limited space. This departure lounge truly puts the passenger center stage. It’s a place to start or continue
your journey with a smile on your face.”

Each of the seven thematic worlds offer passengers a distinctive travel experience, including Family World, where younger passengers can entertain themselves ahead of their flight by playing with a large colorful toy aircraft. The seven worlds include Luxury, Family, Travel and Culture, Modern Dutch, See Buy Fly, Fashion and Lifestyle, and Care and Wellness.
