Expanded retail area opened in T3 at Toronto Pearson International

Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has unveiled a newly redeveloped retail area in Node C of Terminal 3 (T3) at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada.

Designed by engineering consultancy Stantec, the newly redeveloped area has reclaimed landside retail space and moved it beyond security, providing a greater number of retail options for departing passengers.

Node C also features the Eye in the Sky, a vast skylight that extends from the departures floor and up through arrivals, bringing natural light into the area. This is complemented by a large chandelier, which casts a dappled light designed to mimic the sun peeking through leaves. Stylized ‘tree lamps’ and park benches, which are lit softly from within, evoke the feel of an urban park in summer. The newly developed area is part of the airport’s T3 Enhancement Project, scheduled for completion in 2017.

Paul Gogan, principal – commercial buildings, Stantec, said, “When we reimagined Node C, our focus was on creating the best possible passenger experience. Passengers will remember the original space as dark and uninviting. The retail shops were located before security, so passengers on the airside found themselves with few amenities.

“Now, after passing through the stressful, formal check-in and security screening, passengers will flow into this refreshed retail and relaxation space. Here they can wander, rest, relax and shop.

“When combined, these design features create a relaxed accompaniment to the vibrant retail neighborhood. This design doesn’t just bring Node C up to speed with contemporary airports; it will also accommodate growth for the next 30 years,” added Gorgan.
