Smiths Detection receives European EDS certificate for hand luggage screening

The HI-SCAN 6040aTiX has become the first checkpoint screening solution to receive the European Civil Aviation Conference’s (ECAC) explosives detection standard for hand-luggage screening – explosives detection system (EDS) CB C1.

Developed by security screening specialist Smiths Detection, the HI-SCAN 6040aTiX uses the latest x-ray technologies to provide automated solid and liquid explosives detection. With multi-view technology, operators are able to conduct complex analyses in real time, without hampering normal checkpoint procedures.

ECAC’s latest standards focus on the automatic detection of explosives in cabin baggage using state-of-the-art technologies. EDS CB C2 systems will take automation a step further, enabling electronic devices such as laptops to remain in bags. Any system that meets EDS CB C1, C2 or C3, is automatically considered to have achieved EDS HBS (hold baggage screening) Standard 3.

Smiths Detection claims that airports using the HI-SCAN security solution can dispense with random searches using additional explosive trace detectors or dogs, thanks to the solution’s low false detection rate.

Cameron Mann, global market director for aviation at Smiths Detection, said, “We are delighted to be the first in the industry to receive EDS CB C1 certification. Regulators are looking to next-generation detection technology to handle ever-evolving threats and we are proud that they have recognized our ability to keep passengers safe. We’re continuously working to meet the highest industry standards with our security solutions, ensuring passengers can travel safely and securely, while also helping lighten the load for airport operators.”
