Terminal 1 improvements at Hong Kong Airport

Airport Authority Hong Kong has revealed the details of a new HK$7bn (US$900m) enhancement program for Terminal 1 (T1) at Hong Kong International Airport.

The terminal will be extended on its north side, creating additional space for more than 40 bag-drop kiosks and two baggage reclaim carousels. The project also includes the construction of a 1,400 space parking garage, the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy, HKIA Preschool, and more seats, shops and catering outlets for passengers in the Arrivals Hall. It will also enhance facilities for staff with a new community center, a multipurpose sports hall and fitness center, and staff canteens.

The AA is also planning to build a weather-proof Sky Bridge connecting T1 and the North Satellite Concourse. The 200m (660ft) footbridge will feature an observation deck and catering outlets in the towers at both sides, providing scenic spots for passengers.

The East Hall of T1 will also be renovated with the addition of a roof garden, children’s play area, recreational zone featuring new technologies, and an outdoor garden.

Ongoing enhancements of the airport dining and shopping experiences include the refurbishment of the main food halls in the restricted area and the opening of new anchor duty-free shops for liquor, cosmetics and accessories. Project completion is scheduled for 2020.

Fred Lam, CEO of the Airport Authority, said, “The enhancement projects for T1, together with the three-runway system in 2024, will increase the airport’s handling capacity as well as bring a fresh look and feel. Passengers from around the world will enjoy an experience tantamount to traveling through a new airport.”
