First trial run at Kolkata airport is a success

A trial run of the modernised NSC Bose International Airport held yesterday afternoon (15 July) has proved successful, The Hindu Business Line has reported.

The IndiGo flight from Mumbai brought 84 passengers to the new terminal that has been fully modernised to include 104 check-in counters, 25 security kiosks, 18 aerobridges, 53 remote stands for aircraft and a hi-tech baggage handling system.

According to The Hindu Business Line, passengers were happy with the facilities and arrangements made at the terminal building of the airport, with some describing it as on par with Delhi Airport.

Frequent flyer Mr Pushkar Mukherjee commented on the new-look terminal: “It took me just five minutes to reach the terminal gate from the flight. It was unbelievable. Earlier, it used to take at least 20 minutes.”

Officials overseeing the baggage handling trials maintained that it took just two minutes to handle 2,000 trolleys from the bay to terminal.

Operations for domestic airlines are expected to start in October 2012, with operational customs and immigrations set-ups planned for the next couple of months, The Hindu Business Line reported.

The new airport is capable of handling 54,000 passengers a day and 20 million annually. The Airports Authority of India is currently in the process of floating a tender for system maintenance and housekeeping of the new terminal, a spokesperson for the airport operator said.
