Dubrovnik terminal nears completion

A new €274m (US$294m) terminal at Dubrovnik Airport, Croatia, is nearing completion, and is expected to open on schedule next spring. Terminal C is part of a wider expansion plan that will also introduce increased runways and taxiways to the airport, along with improved infrastructure, such as storage facilities, access roads and parking. While the new terminal will open in 2017, the remainder of the work will continue until 2019.

The facility, located next to the existing Terminal B building, will work with its neighbors as a single functioning unit. It has 16 gates, with two for domestic flights and the remainder for international. There will also be a check-in and commercial space, eight security lanes, a departure lounge with catering facilities, a VIP lounge and restaurants. Internal gas stations, a new aviation fuel tank and underground pit system for refueling, and solar panels are being added too.

The redevelopment is largely being financed by EU structural funds to support the airport’s growing passenger numbers. This year has been its busiest yet, with more than 1.9 million passengers recorded from January until October, an increase of 17.7% on 2015. October displayed the biggest growth margin ever, with numbers of 202,703, up 36.4% on 2015. A number of European airlines are planning to commence flights to Dubrovnik next year, and the airport is looking for an airline to travel to and from New York.

Tomislav Macan, chief technical officer, Dubrovnik Airport, told exyuaviation.com, “Construction is ongoing at Terminal C and soon work will begin on linking buildings A, B and C. The aim is to put the terminal into use by the start of the 2017 summer season. Furthermore, an additional two air bridges are in the process of being installed and should be functioning at the same time.”
